About Us

Jeff Shelley and Marissa Calabrese are a husband and wife team who have been dancing together for more than 10 years.  Jeff and Marissa bring their extensive experience and wealth of knowledge in the dance world to M & J Ballroom Dance Studio.

Jeff opened his first dance studio, "New York Hustle," along with his brother Jack in 1971. For many years, he danced on a television show called, "The Soap Factory," he has produced a instructional dance record series called "Do the Hustle," and has danced with well known members of the dance industry, including Billy Fajardo, Floyd Chisholm, and Sandra Rivera.

Marissa is passionate about dance and dance instruction. She has a classic and patient approach, teaching a variety of styles of dance, as well as students of all ages and levels of experience.

Tango

Tango

One of the most fascinating of all dances, the tango is a sensual ballroom dance that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early twentieth century. Tango dancers typically express an element of romance in their synchronized movements.

Hustle

Hustle

Hustle is an American dance which originated in the 1970s. It is traditionally danced to club hits of both the 1970s as well as contemporary times. The dance is designed to be highly dynamic, flashy, and fun!

Swing

Swing

Swing dance is a lively style of social dancing in which a dancer often lifts, spins and flips his or her partner. Considered both hip and cool, swing dancing is a favorite among social dancers of all ages.

Rumba

Rumba

Rumba is one of the most erotic and sensual of all the Latin dance styles due to its slow rhythms and hip movements that create intense bodily expressions.

Fox Trot

Fox Trot

The foxtrot is a smooth, progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. It is danced to big band (usually vocal) music.

Waltz

Waltz

The waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and rise & fall.

Bachata

Bachata

Bachata is a style of dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. The basics to the dance are three-step with a Cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat.

Salsa

Salsa

A very energetic and sensual Latin dance. Lots of fun, complete with spins, sharp movement, and crisp turns.

Cha Cha

Cha Cha

The Cha Cha is a true Latin dance, which originated in Cuba. The Cha Cha includes a triple step that replaces the slow step in Mambo/Rumba.
